General

The impact of AI in our prosperity and well-being is already noticeable in almost all sectors and extends into our private lives. That impact is expected only to increase in the coming years. The scope of the NL AIC is therefore broad. We focus on five generic building blocks (see Building Blocks) that are important for all sectors, such as Healthcare and Agriculture and Nutrition (see sectors). The NL AIC wants to be a sustainable AI ecosystem for the Netherlands. The AiNed investment plan of the NL AIC has a time horizon of about seven years in which we now focus on programming activities specifically for the first two years. Based on data-driven insights, lessons learned, and current circumstances, the future phases will be further developed. Finally, the NL AIC has an international dimension in which we focus on influencing and utilising the policies and resources of the European Commission, on positioning the Netherlands as a leading country on AI and in cooperation with essential partner countries in Europe and beyond.
The NL AIC is a public-private partnership in which government, industry, educational and research institutions and civil society organisations work together. The coalition aims to stimulate, support, and where necessary, organise Dutch activities in AI. It wants to put the Netherlands in a vanguard position in the field of knowledge and application of AI for prosperity and welfare in compliance with Dutch and European norms and values. The NL AIC functions as the catalyst of AI applications in our country.
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, a technological development that has and will continue to have a substantial impact on our future prosperity and well-being. Due to its generic nature, AI will affect all business sectors, our private lives and society. It is a challenge to define precisely what AI entirely entails. Still, the following definition is often used: The ability of a system to correctly interpret external data, learn from this data, and to use these lessons to achieve specific goals and tasks by being flexible and customisable. This ability is traditionally assumed to be human.

Building blocks

Each building block has a working group, in which participants can join, to tackle cross-sectoral challenges and opportunities. There are also working groups for AI application areas. The working groups are the source of knowledge and expertise for participants. They jointly determine their approach and topics with the help of a coordinator and a chairperson.
The NL AIC works together on the necessary knowledge, expertise and results using five building blocks: Data Sharing, Human Capital, Social Acceptance and Inclusion, Research and Innovation and Start-ups and Scale-ups. These building blocks are essential for a significant impact on economic and social application areas (sectors). These themes have emerged as being of common interest in exploratory discussions with many players in the field. We expect them to remain relevant in the coming years.
As a participant in the NL AIC, you can indicate which building blocks you wish to contribute to upon registration. Also, as a participant, it is possible to be informed of the progress and results of all other building blocks.

Sectors

It is important to focus on specific sectors that are relevant to the Netherlands, and their development in the use of AI. These sectors can achieve excellent results, and the knowledge and experience developed can be leveraged to other sectors. Currently, the NL AIC working groups are active in the following sectors: Culture, Defence, Energy and Sustainability, Financial Services, Healthcare, Port and Maritime, Agriculture and Food, Mobility, Transport and Logistics, Education, Public Services, Technical Industry, and Security, Peace and Justice. Click here for the current overview.
As a participant in the NL AIC, you can indicate upon registration which workgroup(s) you would like to contribute. Different people from the member organisations can participate in various workgroups. Besides, it is possible as a participant to be updated of the progress and results of other workgroups through, for example (online) events.
The number of sectors can be expanded. For that to happen, a broad and sufficiently large group of organisations need to benefit and actively participate.

Legal entities, specifically the business community (large, small, start-up), government, research and educational institutions, social or other organisations can participate in the NL AIC. Natural persons (individuals) may not participate as such but as representatives of these organisations. We invite you to consult this page with more information about the criteria for participation.
Participating in the Netherlands AI Coalition means: a quick start in new initiatives and projects. joining forces and learning from others. accessing relevant contacts and organisations in the Dutch AI field. being a partner in new investment opportunities for AI. contributing to a strong Dutch proposition in the area of knowledge and innovation in Europe.
Two options to participate are offered to aim at achieving the most significant possible impact on the development and application of AI in the Netherlands: a participation  or an introduction participation. We would like to invite you to consult this page with more information about participation.

Organisation

The NL AIC has initially been an initiative of VNO-NCW MKB-Nederland, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, TNO, Seedlink, Philips, Ahold Delhaize, IBM, and Topteam Dutch digital delta.
In addition to the working groups, building blocks and sectors, the organisational structure of the NL AIC consists of three administrative entities: Strategy Team, Programme Team and the Coalition Desk.
The Strategy Team consists of high level representatives from research and education, government, business, AI end-users and society. This team deals with strategy, policy and progress on critical issues and stakeholder management.
The Programme Team is the engine of the NL AIC and brings together all the knowledge and experience from the working groups in building blocks and AI application areas. It advises and informs the Strategy Team and is responsible for the implementation of policies to the participating organisations.
The Coalition Desk provides daily support to the working groups and is a point of contact for all participants. Besides, this team takes care of the administration, communication and progress reporting and supports participants in obtaining grants from, for example, the EU funds.
The NL AIC receives a financial contribution from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. Both for starting projects and for facilitating the coordination and support activities of the working groups. The NL AIC also receives contributions from its members for the (partial) financing of substantive projects and network activities or support for the working groups.

Building blocks

AI is a generic technology that is ultimately applicable in all sectors. For the development of knowledge and experience in the use of AI in the Netherlands, it is essential to focus on specific industries that are relevant to our country. These industries can achieve excellent results, and knowledge and experience that can be leveraged for application in other sectors.
