Rapid technological developments in the field of AI are moving at a rapid pace. So too in health care. More than 2 million CT scans are taken each year in the Netherlands. Metal objects are found in about 20% of patients undergoing CT scans. Examples include knee replacements, hip replacements and metal implants used to treat bone fractures. These metal implants introduce metal artifacts into the CT image. Metal artifacts are distortions of the CT image that often look like dark and white streaks. This makes the CT image less assessable by a radiologist, and complications and diagnoses may be missed.
T-Pulse is a system that uses AI and advanced Machine Vision algorithms to analyze live video data feeds from on-site CCTV cameras. The AI models within T-Pulse are designed to recognize a wide range of unsafe behaviors and scenarios, including non-compliance with PPE regulations, working at height, unattended objects, falling objects, suspended loads, line of fire, COVID-19 compliance, gas leaks, liquid spills, and more. These models have been pre-trained on various scenarios and conditions, enabling the system to detect and alert to risks across diverse situations in near-real time.
Knights Analytics is a startup based in Utrecht. They specialize in simplifying the complexity involved in combining and utilizing various data sources. Their developed platform, Alchemia, is specifically designed to innovatively match and consolidate data, no matter how unstructured or contaminated the source data might be. This technology is known as advanced or AI-based entity resolution.
The growing energy consumption and the required grid capacity due to rising temperatures can pose challenges to (telecom) companies, especially when extra cooling is needed to maintain operational temperature. Elevated temperatures may lead to an increased demand for air conditioning systems, cooling equipment, and other cooling applications, potentially resulting in larger and more extreme peaks in energy consumption.
The submission of Parliamentary Questions plays a vital democratic role in the Netherlands. This process provides a means to scrutinize the government. More than 3,000 Parliamentary Questions are submitted annually. Answering these questions is a task taken on by thousands of civil servants across hundreds of organizations and departments.
DEMKit, short for Decentralized Energy Management toolKit, is the software tool developed at the University of Twente for research on smart grid technologies. It is our "Swiss army knife" of choice to tackle the challenges that the transition to renewable energy brings to our energy supply chain.
Electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly contribute to reducing air and noise pollution in metropolitan regions. Charging EVs, however, can put significant strain on local distribution grids. Fortunately, flexibility in the charging process can be exploited to reduce this strain.
Watermelon assists businesses in developing AI chatbots focused on customer service. With advanced AI technology, Watermelon provides intelligent chatbots that effectively and efficiently assist customers, thereby enhancing service quality, offering 24/7 support, and easing companies' workload.

Building blocks

The NL AIC collaborates on the necessary common knowledge and expertise, resulting in five themes, also called building blocks. Those are important for a robust impact in economic and social sectors.

Sectors

AI is a generic technology that is ultimately applicable in all sectors. For the development of knowledge and experience in the use of AI in the Netherlands, it is essential to focus on specific industries that are relevant to our country. These industries can achieve excellent results, and knowledge and experience that can be leveraged for application in other sectors.
